What is Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)?

Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons hold dual qualifications both as medical doctors and dentists. Furthermore, they have completed a comprehensive specialist surgical training program which is accredited by the Australian Medical Council. It takes a minimum of 15 years to qualify as an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon. This ensures that when patients are seen by an Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeon they are in the safest and most capable hands for oral surgery. The benefits of this training and accreditation means:

  • Patients are assessed comprehensively with regards to their condition and medical background.
  • Surgery is completed to a high technical standard.
  • Less risk of complications and in the event of complications, the surgeon has the experience to manage this appropriately.
  • Patients have broader access to claim rebates through Medicare, Hospital Cover, and Dental Extras.
